Nature and history
Ancient landscapes and traces of the past
The rugged landscape of Kolovesi was shaped by the last Ice Age. Steep cliffs rise above narrow waterways, while old-growth forests and rocky shores provide a home for a rich variety of wildlife.
People have travelled through these waters for thousands of years. Ancient rock paintings, including those at Ukonvuori, offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the area’s earliest inhabitants.
Today, much of this landscape remains remarkably undisturbed. The combination of quiet waterways, sheltered islands and ancient forests makes Kolovesi one of the most distinctive natural areas in the Saimaa region.
